Today’s Reminder
24 January 2017

When diagnosed with pulmonary emboli (blood clots in my lungs) at the age of 23, thinking back, I really didn’t understand what was going on. I fought the clots off, but when I was hit with another lot six months later I realised that this was something I was going to have to live with for the rest of my life.

Over the last six years I have spent a lot of time worrying about my health. My medication (warfarin) prevents any clots from reoccurring, which puts my mind at ease. But then I worry about being on warfarin everyday, for the rest of my life. When my levels are low I am at risk of developing clots, and when my levels are high I am at risk of bleeding. This constant balancing act is one I’m not just playing with my warfarin, but with everything that life throws my way.

The best thing that has come from my health experiences is that I have realised the importance of living a balanced life. I’ve learnt to try and let go of small things that bring on stress and sleepless nights. Weekly pilates and painful but rewarding sessions of F45 training have made me physically and mentally stronger.

When it comes to work, I work late into the night running my business on my own, designing new pieces for smaller collections, creating bespoke rings for clients and making each and every piece by hand. I try my absolute best to stay as organised as I can with orders and deadlines, I don’t take on last minute jobs that I know will bring on stress and spend as many weekends as possible (unless a deadline looms) away from the bench.

The one thing though that has helped me the absolute most (aside from support from my family and friends) has been my travels. I truly believe that all the adventures I have been on have healed me in a way that no doctor or medicine could. These trips continue to put things into perspective and make me realise how lucky I am to be in control of my health and therefore my life.

Thank you to the team over at the National Heart Foundation for giving me strength and a platform to tell my story not just through my necklace but also through words, out loud.

A very special pair of custom earrings I made just before Christmas for a bride for her upcoming wedding in Alice Springs. These studs were handmade out of 18 carat yellow gold with two Australian white opals from Andamooka in South Australia and finished off with two blue Australian sapphires.

Congratulations LiAnn!
