This 2.25ct trillion cut Australian parti sapphire recently featured in a custom ring for Courtesy of the Artist. It is one of the most beautiful gemstones I have ever worked with! It has so much depth, a stunning partition of colours, and that cut, well, just perfect. I set this trillion cut Australian parti sapphire in three 18ct white gold rounded claws with a polished, flat profile band.
My client Sue and I had been working on this piece for quite some time. It was such a special process which evolved very naturally. It first began with sourcing the perfect Australian sapphire – one that stopped Sue in her tracks when she first set her eyes on it! This particular sapphire is from Queensland and displayed a rich green tone, radiating a striking yellow zone in the centre. When Sue first saw it, she instantly fell in love.
The design of the ring was just as important as the trillion cut Australian parti sapphire. The thickness of the claws, the height of the setting, the width and the finish of the band, the balance, the proportions and the contrast between metal and stone had to be perfect in order to make this incredible parti sapphire sing.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Australian parti sapphires, these gemstones show two or more distinct colours particularly yellow and blue with green areas where the two former colours have mixed. This quality also makes it impossible to manufacture artificially, so when you see an Australian sapphire you know its natural and from the earth.
